Discrimination in the workplace occurs when an employee experiences harsh or unfair treatment due to their race, religion, national origin, disabled or veteran status, age, gender or other legally protected characteristics. There are different ways of discrimination that occur very often in the workplace. One way of expressing discrimination is denying one a job because of his/her race or gender, or treating others unfairly because of his/her race or gender. Racial discrimination can also involve treating someone maybe an applicant or employee unfavorably because he/she is of a certain race or because of personal characteristics associated with race such as hair texture, skin color, or certain facial features. Also, it occurs if an individual is treated differently based upon their association with members of another race. Discrimination in the workplace can lead to one quitting a job, and possibly doing something harmful to oneself or to the provoker. All employers should perform their responsibility to treat and pay every employee for what they deserve with respect. Although discrimination is strictly prohibited by several federal laws, and in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, racial discrimination is still a problem in private and public companies. Discrimination will probably always be in the workplace, it is one of the biggest problems people face in the workplace and it must be dealt with force. There are many different type of racial discrimination in the workplace and racial discrimination is hurting the people and economies.
There are different type of ways people are discriminated, one way is by harassment. If a co-worker uses racial slurs or jokes, it is harassment. However, the victim needs to first call attention to the insult and tell their supervisor. If the supervisor or company does nothing,
it’s an example of discrimination. Job Classification is another way, many employers have several job tiers, but in cases of discrimination, a person may take on more responsibilities and tasks without having an increase in pay or job classification. Discrimination may occur when a company announces layoffs in a certain department, and although a minority gets fired, other employees of a different race with lesser seniority or skills keep their job. Paying, this may go hand in hand with classification, but also with new hires. An example might be a minority who works up to a position but an employee of a different race with a lesser degree makes more. A person of a certain race may also find that a new hire of a different race makes more than he or she does, despite the current worker having seniority. Promotion is another way of discriminating, if a worker has shown his or her commitment to a company by putting together stellar work, receiving top-notch reviews, and even garnering awards, that person is an asset to the company. However, if this same person applies for a promotion but gets overlooked again and again in favor of less-qualified individuals of a different race, this could constitute racial discrimination.
If black and minority ethnic (BME) talent was fully utilized in the UK, the British economy could be boosted by up to £24 billion ($29 billion). That’s according to a UK government report. The report, commissioned by the former prime minister David Cameron, tackles the issue of why the British workplace doesn’t accurately reflect the diversity of the UK population. For instance, 14% of the UK’s working population are from a Black and Minority Ethnic background, yet they make up only 10% of the workforce. The employment rate for ethnic minorities is only 62.8%, compared to 75.6% for white people. In addition, a higher proportion of people from BME backgrounds are more likely to work in lower paying
occupations such as catering, hairdressing or textiles. BME workers also have an underemployment rate, where people would like to work more hours than they currently do. This means that the British economy is losing out on £24bn – 1.3% of its GDP. The report looked at the reasons why BME workers aren’t getting ahead as much as their white counterparts, the top reasons cited included a lack of the “right” connections and discrimination. In the US the picture is equally troubling. In a report by Pew Research, black people identified discrimination as a major reason on why they have a harder time getting ahead. Blacks are more likely than whites to say black people are treated less fairly in the workplace, by a difference of 42%. By a margin of at least 20%, blacks are also more likely than whites to say racial discrimination (70% vs. 36%), lower quality schools (75% vs. 53%) and lack of jobs (66% vs. 45%) are major reasons that blacks may have a harder time getting ahead than whites. The report also shows how lack of economic opportunity spills over into household income, regardless of education level. In 2014, income for households headed by blacks was $43,300, and for whites it was $71,300.
Racial discrimination has been a problem in America over a long period of time. Racial discrimination can negatively impact a person by causing emotional and psychological damage. Experiencing racial discrimination can cause a person to become depressed, suicidal, anxious, have low self-esteem, drop out of school, and even move away. Racial discrimination can also effect economies in a very bad way. It may cause someone to have a long-lasting hatred towards people of different races. Racial discrimination is something we all should do something about it to put an end to it.
