Even though it is beneficial
to the child, parent and teacher for parents to be involved in a child’s
education there are factors that prevent a parent from helping their child
succeed in school. Sometimes parents do not get involved in their child’s
education simply because they do not care, they see school as a place to drop
children off for eight hours of the day. Other times, parents of low-income and
minority families tend to be less involved or not involved at all. Low-income parents
may not have the time or resources to be involved in school and those who try
to get involved at school end up only doing it temporarily because they do not
feel welcomed by other parents, normally those of a higher social class. Single
parents don’t necessarily have the time to get completely involved in their child’s
education mainly because they are both the caretaker and the breadwinner where
in most families those roles fall on two different people. So, it makes it
harder for them to commit to certain needs the child has. It is also common for
parents not to be involved in their child’s education because of their
inability to understand the material, whether it be because of a language
barrier or the possibility they no longer understand the subject matter. “Findings show that
convectional avenues for involving parents in school were closed to many
parents because specific cultural knowledge was required in order to

1991). Some other parents start off involved but because of
child intervention at a certain age they become less involved or as children
get older, some parents feel like their children should be independent enough

feel embarrassed to have their parent physically active in their school as they
get older, the lower the rate of parent participation drops. They start out
strong in primary education- going to PTA meetings and attending field trips.
Yet, when their children move on to higher education in middle and high school,
their roles diminish.

There are many ways
in which a parent can get involved in their child’s education. They can get
involved physically, academically and emotionally. Parents who get involved physically
attend school events like sports games, music concerts and school plays; They also
make it a point to attend and participate in parent teacher conferences.
Physically involved parents also volunteer at school activities like bake
sales, field trips, school dances or assist on school projects that may require
adult supervision. This type of involvement can have a negative impact on
middle school or high school students.  The
student may be embarrassed to have their parent at present at school activities
and events especially if they are seen as “uncool” in front of their child’s
peers. Academically involved parents aware of the school’s curriculum and how
their child’s formal learning can be enhanced at home. These parents focus on
their child’s schedule out of school. They ensure the child does his
assignments done, eats appropriately and gets an adequate amount of sleep. They
encourage the child to read and they provide supplies and a clean environment
to get basic studying and assignments done. Students with academically involved
parents tend to become curious about social life and activities. If they feel
their parent is pressuring them with too much work and not enough “play” it
causes a child to become rebellious. Emotionally involved parents help by maintaining
a supportive home which supports a child’s progress at school. These parents
constantly discuss the value of a good education and setting career and life
goals. They believe setting high expectations for their children at home will
translate into success in the classroom. When setting expectations for their
children some parents tend to forget that they shouldn’t make their child feel
burdened by the expectations. Setting unrealistic goals make it seem like the
parent is fulfilling their own goals through their child; Parents who do this
tend to eventually emotionally shut down their children.

Teachers and parents should both have the child’s best
interest at heart. They themselves have to establish a clear line of communication
between them. “Research related to child development and education indicates
that family involvement in education, including strong family-school
partnerships, is important for supporting healthy development and positive
educational and social outcomes” (Mautone, J 2015)Teachers should
initiate contact as soon as they know which students will be in their classroom
for the school year. This allows the teacher to personally tell the
parent their expectations for the student for the rest of the school year.
Also, having events like PTA meetings, curriculum nights and parent workshops for
both parents and teachers to interact and talk about their child’s progress and
their advantages and disadvantages as well as ways to further help their
academic life.
Children who see a variety of concerned adults working to help them improve
their school performance respond positively, leading to increased achievement
(Olsen & Fuller, 2003).  When parents and teachers work together
they can come up with innovative ways to help further their development. “Bringing in other adults with unique talents and abilities
also adds to the excitement of the classroom and often leaves teachers feeling
more satisfied with their work “(Gestwicki, 2007). Overall the involved adults
develop a greater appreciation for each other and the challenges of working
with children.

Technology makes it easy for parents
to get involved in their child’s education. It isn’t the cheapest way to get
involved depending on the device. Technology is a
simple way to enhance communication between parents and teachers. One-way technology
can help parents get involved is by using the internet as a way of communication.
Technology makes it easier for teachers and parents to communicate with each
other whether it be by phone calls or emails. Teachers also find emailing
easier to do when they need to contact more than one parents at once. Some schools
may have a web page with useful information like event calendars, teacher’s
information and message boards for other parents to communicate with each other.
Schools also use technology to send emails to remind parents of special
meetings, field trips or volunteering requests. Some teachers use certain websites
to keep track of children’s grades. Some teachers even use technology in the
classroom to give students assignments and extra study material. Through Twitter
feeds, Facebook and Instagram pages school staff members are giving parents
instant updates, news, and information about their children’s schools. With
so many different types of families now, some people may be at a disadvantage. Some
parents may not have the resources available to provide themselves with the
equipment needed, like a phone or a computer, to communicate with teachers or
other parents. Low income parents may not be able to afford the latest device,
they may have other more important priorities. Other parents have language
barriers and are unable to communicate with other parents or teachers, other times
the parent may not be able to understand how to use the device effectively.

For
parents to be able to get involved in their child’s education they must have
enough time, resources and dedication to positively contribute to their child’s
development. If a child has a problem understanding a topic in class the parent
has the responsibility to see that the child has everything he needs to perform
better in class; that child should be provided with time whether it be from
parental help or the parent providing help from after school tutors. Parents with
more than one or unpredictable jobs may not be able to be physically able to
help with assignments or projects because of the lack of time they have
available. It isn’t uncommon in today’s economy that the text books and
supplies needed for school isn’t cheap and sometimes some parents aren’t able
to afford all the necessary supplies. School book rental programs help in some
cases but in others there is a limited supply available, they may not all be in
readable condition or the books just aren’t available to be rented. Parents
have to invest in their child future which means they should be dedicated to
them and their education. Parents should communicate the importance of
education to their future and help them set goals that they are comfortable
with and within the child’s capabilities. This type of dedication makes the
child feel as if someone wants them to succeed in life so that motivates them.
Parent involvement will only make a difference in a child’s life if they can
invest the time resources and dedication needed.
