Anesthesiology is a difficult career path to go down. Anesthesiologists are the physicians trained to administer and manage anesthesia given during a surgical procedure. While under anesthesia, the anesthesiologist are responsible for maintaining critical life functions such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure as they are affected by the surgical procedure being performed. Prior to surgery, the anesthesiologist will go over the patient’s medical condition and come up with a anesthetic plan which takes that patient’s physical condition into consideration. It is very important that the anesthesiologist know as much about your medical history, lifestyle, and medication usage as much as possible.

Some information your anesthesiologist may ask about include: Reactions to previous anesthetics current herbal supplements, known allergies, medications being taken, smoking or drinking, and street drugs. If you have ever had a bad reaction to an anesthetic agent, you need to be able to describe exactly what the reaction was and what your specific symptoms were. It has recently been learned that certain herbal products, commonly taken by millions of Americans, may cause changes in heart rate and blood pressure, and may increase bleeding in some patients. Discussing any known allergies with the anesthesiologist is very important, since some anesthetic drugs trigger cross-allergies, especially in people who have allergies to eggs and soy products. It is also important to let your surgeon and anesthesiologist know about both prescription medications and over-the-counter medications you are taking, or have recently taken. Certain prescription medications, such as coumadin, a blood thinner, must not be taken for some time prior to surgery. Cigarette smoking and alcohol can affect your body just as strongly (and sometimes more) than many prescription medications you may be taking. Because of the way cigarettes and alcohol affect the lungs, heart, liver, and blood, these substances can change the way an anesthetic drug works during surgery. Patients are more likely to withhold information about illegal drug consumption. It is very important to let them in on this type of information, and you should not be scared because that type of information is only disclosed to you and your doctor due to HIPAA rules.

Requirements to become one include a 4 year bachelor’s, 4 year medical school degree, and then a 4 year anesthesiology residency. In highschool you should focus on more science classes, such as biology and chemistry. Also, working or volunteering at a hospital can get you use to working around medical professionals and patients. Undergrads should take on a pre-med major with other liberal art classes. The median annual Anesthesiology salary is $365,252, as of August 03, 2017, with a range usually between$316,432-$414,095, however this can vary.

Anesthesiologists work in hospitals, clinics, and pain treatment centers. An anesthesiologists day can be broken up into three parts. Part of their day in the office doing consultations, the second part visiting patients, and the third is spent in the actual operating room. In complex surgeries a anesthesiologists can spend up to 8 hours in the operating room keeping a patient under. Anesthesiologists who work in hospitals usually work longer hours than an anesthesiologists that work in a clinic or pain treatment center. Those who work in other places other than a hospital usually don’t work during weekends and holidays as they are constantly on call. As for those that do work in hospitals, it’s the complete opposite. Anesthesiologists who work in hospitals may have to work long hours, sometimes up to 65 hours a week. Anesthesiologists usually take about 20 to 30 vacation days a year and are rarely required to travel as part of their job. Anesthesiologists who work only in pain treatment centres may not have to work on weekends and they are not usually on call. These anesthesiologists also work as part of a team of other professionals such as physiotherapists and psychotherapists.

Anesthesiologists require a lot of schooling, but rewards an incredible pay. They put patients under anesthesia as surgical procedures take place. They can work long hours or normal hours like other working people of the country. It may not be easy but it’s totally worth it.They receive wonderful benefits and is overall a unbelievable job to have.
